Android Menu MenuItem Example
Author : Ishtek

Using Android API Level : 7
In this tutorial we shall be covering Android's MenuItem and Menu API with the help
of an example.

Final screen of this Images Merge example would look like the below image:

In the following section I shall be covering through various files I coded/used
to get this example working. This example has only two views such as Main Layout and
the Menu Layout from Android API.

Following is the main layout of this example.

main.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="#FFFFFF" > <TextView android:id="@+id/text" android:text="Menu Example - Touch this text for slightly long time to see the context menu options." android:textColor="#0000FF" android:textStyle="bold" android:textSize="12px" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> <SurfaceView android:background="#FFFFFF" android:layout_height="200dp" android:layout_width="200dp"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/text1" android:text="" android:textColor="#000000" android:textStyle="bold" android:textSize="12px" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> </LinearLayout>
This main layout is having a simple layout with a LinearLayout and having three UI components such as two TextView and a SurfaceView. This layout is having a white color background. menulayout.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <item android:id="@+id/menuItem1" android:title="Menu Item1" android:icon="@drawable/m1"> </item> <item android:id="@+id/menuItem2" android:title="Menu Item2"> </item> </menu>
The above file will be providing the layout for the contextual menu to use. As shown in the above code, there are two items under menu tag, so at runtime there will be two menu options shown from within the contextual menu is invoked. MenuExample.java
/** * This code is provided on "AS IS" basis * @Author: Ishtek */ package com.techienjoy.example; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.ContextMenu; import android.view.Menu; import android.view.MenuItem; import android.view.View; import android.widget.TextView; public class MenuExample extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); TextView txtView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.text); registerForContextMenu(txtView); } @Override public void onCreateContextMenu(ContextMenu menu, View v, ContextMenu.ContextMenuInfo menuInfo) { super.onCreateContextMenu(menu, v, menuInfo); getMenuInflater().inflate(R.layout.menulayout, menu); } @Override public boolean onContextItemSelected (MenuItem item) { super.onContextItemSelected(item); TextView txtView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.text1); txtView.setText(item.getTitle()); return true; } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu); MenuItem m1 = menu.add(0, 1, Menu.FIRST, "Menu 1"); m1.setIcon(R.drawable.m1); MenuItem m2 = menu.add(0, 2, 0, "Menu 2"); m2.setIcon(R.drawable.m2); return true; } }
Above source code is just to accomplish this example and to get it working as soon as possible. One can try out many other ways to present menu options keeping in mind end user usability and easy to navigate throught various screens and components of this example. For example, in the above code and in the onCreatOptionsMenu overriden method, you can have menu options created based on the user's role and priviledges. and by overriding following method one can get callback when an option menu is selected: @Override public boolean onMenuItemSelected(int featureId, MenuItem item) { super.onMenuItemSelected(featureId, item); TextView txtView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.text1); txtView.setText(item.getTitle()); return true; }
