Android UIThread Animation Example
Author : Ishtek

Using Android API Level : 7
In this example we shall see a very simple ways to work with
various implementations of LayerDrawable from Android platform and I have used LayerDrawable
API from Android Platform.

main.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" > <TextView android:id="@+id/txtView" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content"/> <ImageView android:id="@+id/imagesAnimActual" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content"/> <ImageView android:id="@+id/imagesAnim" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:visibility="invisible"/> <Button android:id="@+id/button" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Animate"/> </LinearLayout>
As you might have noticed by now there are two ImageViews, one is hidden and the other is not. The hidden one is used to populate all the drawables from another list of items in form of 6 different images, as shown below: exampleanimation.xml
<layer-list xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <item android:drawable="@drawable/ball1"/> <item android:drawable="@drawable/ball2"/> <item android:drawable="@drawable/ball3"/> <item android:drawable="@drawable/ball4"/> <item android:drawable="@drawable/ball5"/> <item android:drawable="@drawable/ball6"/> </layer-list>
Main Activity code of this example looks something like as follows: AnimationExample.java
package com.techienjoy.animation.example; import android.app.Activity; import android.graphics.drawable.Drawable; import android.graphics.drawable.LayerDrawable; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.View; import android.view.View.OnClickListener; import android.widget.Button; import android.widget.ImageView; import android.widget.TextView; public class AnimationExample extends Activity { private ImageView imgView; private LayerDrawable layerDraw; private TextView txtView; private Drawable[] draws; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); ImageView imgView1 = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.imagesAnim); imgView1.setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.exampleanimation); layerDraw = (LayerDrawable) imgView1.getBackground(); imgView = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.imagesAnimActual); draws = new Drawable[6]; for(int i=0;i<draws.length;i++) { draws[i] = layerDraw.getDrawable(i); } txtView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.txtView); Button button = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button); button.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { Thread thread = new AnimateThread(); thread.start(); } }); } @Override public void onStart() { super.onStart(); } @Override public void onResume() { super.onResume(); } private class AnimateThread extends Thread { private int i; public void run() { for(i=0;i<draws.length;i++) { runOnUiThread(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { txtView.setText("# "+i); imgView.setBackgroundDrawable(draws[i]); imgView.postInvalidate(); txtView.postInvalidate(); } }); try { Thread.sleep(100); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } }
Please don't think that this example is trying to demonstrate how to do animation with many images, but this example shows how a custom/user defined thread can be able to update UI widgets using runOnUiThread method from Activity API from Android Platform.

Can you show an example using multiple images form of animation using UI Thread,
as background processing?

Any help would be appreciated.
